Rentokil - £400 to get rid of a mouse?

  • I didn't think to try the council.

However, I telephoned the Rentokil guy that we dealt with and he's cancelled the £400 contract and is switching us to the 3 visit, guaranteed to get rid of the mice deal at £190. So I'm OK with that.

Years ago I lived in a flat and looked after my mum's cat for a couple of days. Mum's cat went home with fleas and we were left with fleas jumping all over our house and biting us! We think previous owners had pets and the eggs lay dormant until a cat came to stay. It was a long, hot summer and the fleas spread like wildfire. We tried to get rid of them ourselves but ended up having to phone the council. I have never been so embarrased in my life....

A heavy knock at the door. I opened it and it was like something out of Ghost Busters. The guy was kitted out in boiler suit, head gear, rubber boots, rubber gloves and a big tank on his head. "Have you got fleas missus?" he shouts (for all the neighbours to hear) at the top of his voice then marches in spraying everything (including me) in his path.

I realise this is posted a bit late but I am becoming a bit of an expert in mice! I had to call out Rentokil a few years ago as I had a mouse problem. I went for the £400 a year option as I had tried, unsuccessfully, to get rid of them myself. I completely recommend Rentokil.

I tried the council firstly as they were cheaper. About £75 if I remember but the mice came back.

I now have a mouse problem again so I'll be calling in Rentokil once more. I had a quote a few weeks ago and they do another option of a shorter period and about £250, I think. I need peace of mind so I'd prefer a year long treatment.

Here are some facts from experience.

Mice do not always come in for food.
They can jump over and run around traps.
Shop bought poison doesn't kill them.
    Cats do not deter them.
They can be seen during the day.
They do not always keep close to the skirting boards.
They can steal food from traps without setting them off.
Traps do not always kill them!
    The sonic plug-ins are useless.
Peppermint oil does not seem to affect them either.
    They can climb quite high.

I think maybe the Rentokil guy, in this instance, perhaps thought the lady would feel more assured by a year long treatment and this does work out the better value for money.

I'm not sure if there is a difference in a field mouse coming in to your home as I have not had experience of them. I can only say that the thought of house mice running around my home at night really, really freaks me out!

    Just a little !
I agree totally with your list .
But still think you are crackers to give (£400 plus £250 ) to get rid of some mice .

We used a company from the yellow pages to get rid of some rats (don't think I am allowed to name)

It was £90 but that included unlimitted visits until the problem was resolved.

They came about 4 times in total from the other side of London and laid traps and bait!

Sure they must have made a loss on the job but sorted it out 100%

Anyway my point is try and find a company that does a fee to resolve the problem rather than a per trip price.
