I think there are enough fabulous ideas bonar - good luck. I once had to rustle up something similar with 1 day's notice - loooonnngg story. Big sucess was a huge bowl of plain cooked long grain rice to which I added several pots of Basil pesto and mixed well. It was out of this world and thank you Delia/Summer cooking. Another was her veggie dish of Couscos with peppers, feta cheese, roasted veggies and harrissa dressing. All very tasty and cold. My own concoction was a hugh bowl of small cooked new pototatoes marinated in french dressing with added balsamic vinegar. Made the day before for flavours to develop. All easy on the purse recipies. Good luck. MW

Another thought, couldn't you set up a BBQ outside for hamburgers in buns?

  • Hey Bonar

If you want to save yourself some hassle (and possibly money) with the sausage rolls, Iceland do bags of 80 mini ones for £2 and they're lovely - I'm fussy about sausage rolls but never found any gristle or nasty bits in them at all, always have a bag in my freezer. Generally I'm wary of meat products from Iceland but would recommend these, just brush with egg, 25 mins in the oven and they're done.

Iceland's frozen party deserts are quite nice too and they often have offers on big packs of barmcakes and crisps and the larger economy size tubs of butter/spread and mayo etc, so might be worth a trip.

    Hope it all goes well!

  • For tea/coffee you need to hire or borrow an urn (local scout/guide group maybe?)
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Hi

Years ago I used to be responsible for the food for a joint birthday party between me and 5 guys - I used to do alot of the cooking and they used to do the shopping, lifting, setting up so it was all OK!!

We used to hire a room in a pub so everything had to be cold and easy to carry down the road. What I realised was that less is more - ie less choice but things that go really well together, then you can bulk up rather than just doing a bit of everything which can mount up..

    So for eg:

    - cold ham, turkey slices
    - baked potatoes
    - salad
    - ratatouille
    - tuna pasta salad
    - big bowls of potato salad, coleslaw
    - french bread & pate & cheese
    - simple puddings like brownies and cakes (nothing in huge portions) little bits work well and can also be taken home again)

Plus put cheap peanuts and crisps on tables around the room.

Depending on extra money - chicken drumsticks, sausages, dips, strawberries to go with cakes.

Offer big bowls of what you have - it looks very generous!!

Costco can be pricy for ready-made stuff, but great for lots of other things, especially if you need large quantities. I've just bought 4 packs of small baguettes (2 in each) for £1.99 - just need to go in the oven.
If you have enough time, you could do a trial visit to check out what they have, write prices down etc. Their cakes/buns etc are gorgeous.

    Hope it goes well.
  • Hiya

Costco quiches are lovely we always get them for family birthday parties. The cakes are also great value as someone else has said. They are also quite rich so you don't need a big slice.

We always get plates, bowls etc from Costco but it may be that the pound shop will be a cheaper option, I hate paper plates so we get the polystyrene ones.

Cold pizza is fine at a buffet especially if there are a load of uni friends.

It would be worth doing a run to Costco first if you can as they have so much stuff. The apple pies are wonderful as are the chocolate fudge cakes.

Could you ask a few people that are close to the family to bring a few dishes? I for one love helping out at parties by bringing a dish and I have seen it work really well at a wedding.

If possible put some bowls of crisps and nuts on each table, they will stop people feeling so hungry when the time comes to hit the buffet.

    Hi angie,

If catering for that amount of people I would go for at least two (probably three) hot dishes, maybe chilli, sweet and sour pork, boeuf stroganoff etc (providing that you can keep them warm) and pad it out with rice, baked potatoes, various salads, cold pasta dishes, and breads because I think that's the cheaper option.

Alternatively what about a couple of cold roast meats.....sliced beef, gammon, chicken, pork etc again padded out with baked potatoes, rice/pasta/green salads, coleslaw, potato salads with plenty of fresh bread and finger foods. Don't be afraid to ask close friends and family for help with food, crockery, cutlery, glasses etc.

There are some good ideas on these earlier threads with some advice on quantities that may help:
