NS&I Cheque

I recently cashed in some savings with NS&I and recieved a cheque through the post.
However, when I went to cash this at my bank Barclays, they refused.
They said it needed a MICR code on the bottom and the imprinted one that is on the cheque wasn't acceptable.

Is this common with NS&I cheques or is there a misunderstanding at the bank?

Any help appreciated, thanks

I would phone them (NS&I) now - or any day before midnight - and see what they say.
