Discounts not given by Supermarkets?

Yesterday I bought at Tesco a deal of Any 2 x cooked chicken packs for £5. Today I bought at Co-Op 2 x Healthy Living meal packs for £4. All packs were clearly marked with the discounted price.

In both cases I did not receive the discount from the full pack price.

On a 10 minute phone call, Tesco told me to go to take the wrappers to the nearest store and reclaim the money. At the Co-Op I discovered the error at the checkout and I was given the discount at the till - but I held up a queue of shoppers in the process.

Am I being cynical, or are the supermarkets deliberately doing this on the assumption that very few shoppers check their receipt before leaving the checkout line and most shoppers would never look at the item pricing anyway?

Any views on this by other hard pressed shoppers?

It happens time after time in Morrisons, i make a point of checking my receipts
    in any shops now.

The times I am overcharged is ridiculous. Its really annoying, even if its just £1 its my £1.

At least at Asda, if you are overcharged you get a £2 gift token as a sorry
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

There's no doubt that "black profit" acquired through discrepancies between marked prices and scanned prices is raking in millions for the big supermarkets - have a look at this for example.

In the case of Tesco, you would be entitled to Double the Difference back not just the amount you were overcharged by.

Tesco have a very long history of overcharging

I always check my receipts, for everything I buy.

It's quicker to do that, than to go home and discover an error and try to sort it out.

This may be a bit long, so please stick with me.

yesterday, in another thread, I mentioned that I'd spotted a huge amount of Morrisons bread rolls in my local at 12 for 30p. They really did have a lot, best before 31 Jan.

I didn't buy any at the time, as I didn't actually go into the shop. Today I went into the shop, and the rolls were still there, but less than half were left. So I bought some.

At the checkout the young girl scanned them and instantly said "Oh no, they've come up as 50p". She "Credited" or "Discounted" me 20p immediately, then called for the supervisor and told her what had happened.

The supervisor said it was the "Admin Dept" fault, they had the price wrong on the computer.

I shop every day and always know exactly how much it will cost me at the checkout, so if I get charged the wrong price for something I know as soon as they tell me the total. But this time I went away happy because the checkout girl had spotted the mistake before me and put it right immediately.

Now, here comes the point of my post.

Since I had spotted the rolls yesterday they have sold half of them, a huge amount.

Why didn't someone spot the mistake before the girl that served me?

They must have sold at least 100 packs before I bought mine!

This didn't occur to me until I started writing this post. I started out to write how good the check out girls in Morrisons were. Then I typed "less than half were left" and it dawned on me, they'd sold half of them before the checkout girl spotted the error.

This raises the question.....Did none of the staff and customers before me notice the error, or if they did, did the supervisor just blame the admin dept, and not get them to rectify the price?

I have had the same thing in Morrisons so many times I got fed up and stopped shopping there. Big/tv ads for products on offer and then if you don't check your receipt they will have got away with charging you full price.

When I went to customer service they told me they knew about it already so I asked why they had not changed the price on their system. They looked at me like I was from another planet...

As someone who works in a supermarket and sees this a lot,
    please do check your reciepts.
Mistakes happen and sometimes special offers don't make it on to the system for whatever reason. Customer services/checkout staff should be more than happy to give you the discount your entitled too (dtd for tesco)
  • Have to admit that, unless I am short of time, I actually like getting overcharged - especially in Tesco's where it is Double The Difference, although if it is a small amount I quite like Asda too - got overcharged by 37p the other day and not only do you get the 37p back but then you get a £2 gift card too, butter than Tesco in this instance!

    much butter indeed...

it can also happen frequently on items which have been reduced but the reduction sticker has not covered the original bar code properly.
