Cost of band/dj/entertainment

I'm trying to get an idea of how much is reasonable to pay for wedding entertainment. I was thinking I'd prefer to get a band rather than a dj, 'cos I love live music, but the only band I've had a quote from charge between £1200-1500 for an evening, which seems quite expensive.
Is this about usual, or did I just get a pricey one? Anyone have an idea on the costs of a band v a dj?
TIA:)

depending if it's in wedding season,
DJ apx £200-£300
bands of course will vary as to how many members in it
but for a 3 piece apx £350-£450
have you tried contacting a local agencyI

Hi - we are paying £250 for our DJ (he will be entertaining us from 7pm-midnight)Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0

My dads band charge £100 a head for the evening. There are 5 of them so £500 normally - they're a BRILLIANT live band and they're doing ours for free! Dad is looking forward to showing off his skills lol x0

We got our Dj for £175 as its mdweek.
We have an excellent busker in town, music student at uni, and we were thinking of stopping him one day and asking if he'll play my favourite song as i walk down the aisle on his guitar (he's got a great voice too), we'll bung him a few quid of course. Its either him or a CD as i am not paying £200 for the organ to play 2 songs which i dont want anyway.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!:T0 -
Our DJ is £180 from 7-midnight, and an extra £25 if we want him till 1am. (which is when bar closes)
I enquired about a band and was told £1K so I quickly decided against that lolTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
most bands i enquired about were £1000 -£1500 that was for 3 or 4 piece bands.
The band i booked was £950 for the 4 hours but were having them for 5 and its an extra £150.
i spoke to a singer/dj who used backing tracks and he was £400 for the night.would love to win an ipad!

thing is when you ask for a quote dont say it's for a wedding as that will pump up the price a bit, just say its for a birthday or somethingI
