Diapol Granite Kitchen Worktop

I'm having a real nightmare with this company, Diapol, at the moment.

In November 2009 I was looking for a granite worktop company to get a new worktop for my kitchen and having looked around at a few different companies, found Diapol who seemed very reasonably priced and had some good things written about them on this forum. I arranged for the fitter to come over and take the measurements and they send me the order form which I duly completed and returned and this included a fee for the measuring up service.

When the worktop arrived to be fitted about 3 weeks later, one piece was too short by about 6 cm. So there was a gap where the two pieces should have joined in an L shape. The fitter said he would be able to fix it seamlessly and returned a week later with a piece to bridge the gap but this wasn't the correct thickness and the result was far from seamless. So I asked him to arrange for a new piece as I wasn't happy with the result as it wasn't the beautiful expensive looking worktop I was paying for. He agreed to do this and replace the worktop when I returned from Christmas holiday.

Having returned in early January I was then informed that the head office were refusing to sanction the new piece as they had provided what was on the quote. I argued that the drawing was incorrect and they had not asked me to specifically check every measurement on the drawing. I'm not a professional in this area and had no way of checking quite a complex drawing which wasn't just two rectangles! I also contacted Trading Standards who agreed that this was a breach of the 1982 Supply Of Goods And Services Act as reasonable care and skill had not been taken to provide the correct measurements. They also agreed that as a layman/consumer I could not be expected to check a professional's drawings even if they had asked me to check them exactly which they didn't.

Diapol are no longer responding to my letter/emails and are insisting it's my fault that the worktop was as it was.

So here's a warning to anyone dealing with Diapol. Don't expect them to rectify any mistake made in the measuring up process. Even if they don't ask you to check every single measurement on the quote drawing, DO check them. If you're not comfortable checking millimeter accurate measurements then I'd suggest finding another company for your worktop.
