And when I posted originally, there was indeed rooms available at £26 in December in the city centre lodge, possibly not weekends, but don't think weekend was specified in original post. Don't worry no offence taken!
We have stayed out at Musselburgh, and it is fine too. There are advantages and disadvantages in both depending on your point of view.
We have stayed at Travel Inn Musselburgh, also Travelodge there. The former is really good, as it has a beer garden, nice surroundings......but absolute little to do unless you have a car. Travelodge - it's fine, but more for a driving stop off - nothing to do with the hotel, it's just too far out of the way.
The Travel Inn (sorry Premier Travel Inn) at Duddingston is really nice too, beer garden and just a quick bus ride into the centre. Nice to get out of the city and get some air - also you can have nice walks up or around the foot of Arthurs Seat.
If I go with hubby, we prefer to stay on the outskirts. If I go with teenage shopaholic daughter, its easier for us to be in the centre - not too far from hotel for me to collapse into bed!
Edited because I made a mistake with travelodge/travelinn
