The travel inn is quite close to the Hilton, probally 5 mins walk at most.

I've put our MD in there a couple of times in the last year and he's not moaned yet but it's quite close to the Grassmarket (loads of pubs) so it might be noisy at the weekend.

There are loads of places to eat near by, I'm sure there's a thread on here about MS places to eat in Edinburgh or else try having a look on 5pm.co.uk closer to the time for discount on 'posher' places to eat.

From the first week in December or so, Edinburgh has a German christmas market on Princess Street (10-15 mins walk) and there is quite a lot of shops in the centre of town, so you should beable to find presents for most people.

If saving money is the main thing, look at the travelodge website.
They book some saver rooms at 26 quid per night.

There is one on the east of the city, Musselburgh EH21 8RE, which would be a 10 min taxi into city centre, but would cost 52 quid for the 2 nights. The money saved compared to the travel inn gets you the taxis, a curry, some beers !!:T

I would check before booking the Musselburgh travel inn as it is outwith Musselburgh and I dont think it has a direct bus route into town. I would also check on taxi fares as it may not appear too far, it is considered outwith the city boundary which would make taxis more expensive.

I with you on this. I'd stay at the lowpriced one and the saving pays for dinner

Basicly - city centre at christmas is never cheap

No but i live about 10 mins away from there. Its quiet and nice area, outside the old (disused) fire station (its now a museum

The hilton? i dont know why - some of the cheaper hotels are just as nice as the hilton. The hilton does have a concierge doorman but hey, you get what you pay for

Yes, it is about a 5 min walk.

Walk out of the hilton turn right and walk down the gentle hill towards the big clock in the middle of the road, HBOS (Halifax bank of scotland is next to this) - turn right again and you will be on Lothian Road - walk to the bottom of this road and your there, its on the left hand side at the bottom of the road.

Pubs, well there are loads and loads and loads of pubs. from the hotel, you will habe to walk approx 3 mins to a pub - apart from the one in the hotel. as for places to eat - you name the food, you are within a max of 10 min walk to the place.

Shopping - you will love it - Princess Street, at christmas is brilliant. i will say though, dont expect to walk in and out of the shops, you will see so much stuff....

other things i will say - bring a heavy coat, if it snows, its even colder. your hotel is around the corner from the castle

also, i would normally agree with comments above about staying in the other place but i would disagree on this occasion as the other hotel is in musslebourgh - its along way outside edinburgh. it would take about hour or so to get in. the number 30 bus goes all the way and it takes about 40 mins from city to the fort so i would add on another 20 mins atleast to that journey. Plus, wouldnt be helpful if you had to meet up with your friends or you were tired and wanted to go back....

What about staying in the Travelodge in the city centre? It's in St Marys Street, just off the Royal Mile. We stayed in there when took my daughter out for her 18th and it was ideal for getting about. You might manage to get in there at cheaper rates depending when you are going - doubt you will get the £15 rates, but you may well get the £26.

I feel all defensive now that my musselburgh suggestion has been criticised. People seem to have missed the point. Even if taxis are a bit more expensive than normal, it would still be cheaper than staying in the centre. If they are going with other couples then the cost of the taxi can be shared between at least 4.

My autoroute says 6.9 miles from the travelodge to the top end of princess street - that would take 15 mins in a taxi. I owuld not expect more than 12 quid.

I never mentioned buses. Far too slow.

And in response to Anne Marie, I checked the city centre travelodges for several weekends in December and none of them have the 26 quid saver rate available. When I plan a trip I'm bloody thorough. So ner ner ner ner ner !!!!!

One last suggestion - leave booking a bit later and try https://www.laterooms.com.

I am sorry if I offended you, I did not mean it as a critisism(sp?)I was only pointing out the draw backs. The only reason I commented at all,is because I stay 10miles outside Edinburgh on the east side and know the set up of the travel lodge in question and also the way the taxis charge up here. If the journey is outside the city boundary at all, the fare is much higher. I was mearly suggesting that the op check with the travel lodge staff direct before booking, perhaps that was not clear.
You have obviously put a lot of time, and thought into your posting and I applaud you for that, many would not take the time to do this. As I have said it is only because I am local to the area that I felt I would make comment.
Again please accept my apologies, it is never my intention to offend people who take the time to give advice.
