Accessing data on old Ipod

Options
I have an old Ipod video which I was using to store photos, videos etc and it no longer works. Wont charge or turn on and I've tried changing the battery with no luck. I really want to get these files from it as there are photos of my daughter as a baby that I do not have stored elsewhere.

Does anyone know how I can go about recovering this data? I have tried some places locally that offer data recovery services (PC world, independent pc shops etc) but they say they can't do it on an ipod.

Help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The short answer is to buy broken from ebay (always loads with HDD issues) and swap the drives over.

I've done this in the past and then sold on the old carcass as spares / repair. Should only end up costing a pound or two if you're lucky. Much cheaper to ascertain if the drive is shot than paying for data recovery which won't work.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Is it easy to swap them over then? What ipods should I look out for? What is an HDD issue?

HDD Issue - the lights come on but the HDD doesn't work

    As for what to do

What you need to buy though is dependent on what model of ipod you have.

If you aren't certain then use the following to tell us what model you have

You'll find ipods listed on ebay as 'no hard drive' 'not working - supected HDD failure' etc.

You need to find one the same model as yours, and buy it. Make sure there are no other faults listed. Better listings give lots of info on the fault with the item being sold. Generally you can get one for about £20 - £25.

It's a ten minute job to replace the drive, and really quite easy. There are video guides available from a google.

If that resolves the problem, then you can sell your old ipod for spares / repairs on ebay, and will likely get £20 - £25 for it. It's ebay fees that account for any costs.
