Painting plaster and wood

I have had a new (fitted) wardrobe finished, when I say fitted I mean plaster and wood.
What should I put on the plaster, how long should I wait for it to dry, can I put clothes in there in the meantime (until I find the time to paint)
I have also had some wooden shelves put in, should I just paint these, any primer? also I will be storing jumpers and shoes on the shelves, should I use some sort of carpet attached to the bottom?
Hope some one can help!
