I have just received another bill from Powergen :( & on looking at the huge charges I am beginning to wonder if I have a problem with my meters. I was paying £66 per month until August 2005 when it shot up to £87 per month, I'm not 100% when I changed to 1 bill for both gas & electricity.

We live in a 3 bedroom mid-terrace which has gas central heating & a very ancient boiler which is on for 3 hours a day (it was 4 hours a day over the winter) with the odd hour boost when needed. We do have TV on & off most of the day, the same with the PC. We have good double glazing but we are aware that the loft could do with better insulation.

Are my bills excessive?

I hope my new house is a bit more energy efficient :)

Yes they look high but I think after reading the posts on here, everyones having to pay loads for gas and leccy. We in the process of switching from Southern Electric to Npower. We pay £60 for leccy and £32 for gas although they want to take £57 a month for gas.

    They are all robbing buggas!

We have 2 people in our house, out a work full time, the pc, fridge and frezzer are plugged in.
Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

we only pay £35 per month for each (£70 total ) so to me they seem very high !!

We live in a 3 bed ex council semi, I am at home all day with two small children ( cbeebies on constantly !) The hot water is on 4 hours a day at moment.
Maybe try switching off a few things at a time and see if you can find what uses the most power ??

In the year July 05 to July 06 you paid £858 for gas and electricity which works out at £71.50 per month. Presumably you are now paying £87 a month because you had run up a debit balance last year.

You paid £652 the previous year which is about the same consumption, given the huge rises in the past year.

According to Government sources the average household is paying something like £950 per year so your £858 is not excessive.

You used 1001 units(kWh) in the last quarter(April - July). As this is normally the lowest quarter - later dark and lights on less etc - your electricity consumption is probably around 4,500kWh which is a bit higher than average.

But overall I wouldn't say your bills are excessive.

Our Gass and electric comes in at £59.50 per month (for both) and we are currently in credit by £53.51 to May 2006.

Over the last year we have had cavity wall insulation / loft insulation and every hosehold lightbulb changed to energy saving.

We still have an old back boiler and hot water tank but this has been re-lagged.

As a result of this bills are down from £69 per month for both in previous years.

There are five of us living in a 3 bed Semi. So to me that does look very expensive.

However having said that we were on capped rate which has just ended and the electricity kwh price has gone up from 4.5p to 7.113p and gas kwh has gone up from 1.204p to 2.473p so just calculating how much extra this will be.

OMG - just quickly worked it out on the calculator. The Feb - May quarter did cost me £135.00 (ex VAT) and at the new pricing this would have cost me £309.00 (ex VAT). Will be looking for some comparisons as well.
