Anybody from Peterborough area?

I'm doing a little research :D OH has applied for a job which would mean a move, but I don't know Cambridgeshire at all.

I guess I'm looking to get a rough idea of prices in quieter, preferably more rural areas out of town before we make any more decisions and it's hard trying to look for properties when you have no idea where they are lol

It's probably not going to happen, but it is worth a look around to see whats available down that way before we make any firm decisions.

Thanks all

Peterborough has a variety of villages/small towns within 10/12 mile radius ranging from typical Fenland villages and towns to stone built villages in less flat countryside (west of city). Best search Rightmove for type of house you want in your price range.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Don't forget my neck of the woods. I love the villages around Bourne and Stamford but so do many other people so prices aren't the cheapest.

Look north and west. South and east aren't nice, former clay pits for bricks etc. and tatty places like Yaxley and Whitlesey and the squeezed in new-builds in Hampton.

Stamford is Georgian at the centre but has loads of 1990s estates stretching out to the A1. On the road between Peterbrough and Stamford you've got Marholm, Bainton, Barnack which are small with minimal infill housing. The north is Glinton which is OK.

If you don't mind the commute on the A47, Castor and Ailsworth got bypasses from the A47 10+ years back and are OK.

Coming in from the south west on the very busy A605, you've got Oundle and loads of small village like Stoke Doyle, Wadenhoe, Polebrook and Fotheringhay. The villages all have a pub and church, notably Fotheringhay.

In Peterborough itself, the tiny amount of good quality housing there is tends to be on Fulbridge Road, although it's not universally true a house on Fulbridge road is desirable. The roughest place in the city is Millfield, of the 1970/80s estates, the Orton's aren't too clever.

Stamford has large estates dating from 1950s (council) on NE and from 1960s (private) on N, W and NW, with a lot of brownfield redevelopment south of river (St Martins). Unless you are rich forget about "character" properties in the town centre. There are Victorian and Edwardian terraced properties, but in general these aren't that cheap.

But remember Stamford is a town and although most of the factories have closed is less "rural" than it was. 50 years ago the house in which we once lived was virtually next door to open country, now it is 1 mile away.

There are other parts of Pboro which have good housing, but some of these are expensive. Other villages to consider are Ufford and Helpston and perhaps Northborough and Peakirk. Market Deeping/Deeping St James are 2 adjoining large villages (small town now) with a variety of housing and old stone buildings in centre. Oundle and villages between are again stone built.

The obvious problem with the smaller villages is that houses don't come up for sale that often.

Amcluesent is basically correct about S and E, IMHO Whittlesey has more character than Yaxley.

Not necessarily. As poor press as this city gets it was the place I was born and raised and I still love it.

I think its the people around you that make a home, not necessarily a place and Stoke seems to have a lot of really nice people :)
