I want to restore my bath

Hi All

I am redoing my bathroom, and my bath looks very tired. Theres marks and stains and it is an off white colour. I dont want to go to the expense of replacing the bath. I think it's a steel bath, (i cant tell for sure) Is there any product on the market I can use to give it a glossy white shine again?

  • Hi,
You can obtain kits to repaint your bath but I am not sure how good they are and I suppose it also comes down to ones level of DIY skills.
Try Mend a bath for an idea of the kits and I would assume the major DIY stores would have some kind of paint finish available!
Alternatively you could try the Bath Doctor.

I have not used these products personally but know of someone that used a Bath Doctor type onsite company and they were really pleased with the work.
Sorry I don't see them anymore so can't get the company details.

    Thanks Gaz.

It's not too badly gone, so maybe one of the DIY kits will do.

We had our cast iron bath re-enamelled.

It was crap. If anybody is thinking of having it done...don't bother.
Its more or less like having your bath spray painted.
After the first year...we could still feel the rough sharp bits as you slide into the bath.
After 2 years, we had chips coming off it every week.
    It now looks a mess.
    wish I'd got a new bath. :-/

Before you go to the expense of kits, try cleaning it.

Using a very fine wet 'n dry sandpaper, gently sand down the old enamel. I used a slight abraising cleaner with the sandpaper. Once you've got it clean, then 'seal' it with a few coats of the stuff designed for cleaning and polishing car paint - make sure it's for white paintwork. To keep it's appearance, clean and re-polish every so often.
