Question about motability please :)

Hi all,

After a hugely disasterous (and expensive) week with our current car we've decided to look into getting a motability lease car.

I've had a read of their website which seems pretty straightforward, and we're going to look into having a look about at some dealers this weekend.

However, on their website it mentions trading in your old car towards the advanced payment. Has anyone any experience of this, and is it possible or have I read it wrong?!

We require a larger MPV so any help towards the advanced payment would be helpful!

Thanks :)

  • As far as I am aware, they will take your old car off your hands. Speak to the dealers when you pop round to see them and get a valuation. As you say, anything will help towards the advance payment!!

Why do you need the larger MPV? Poor roads, multiple kids or more than one mobility scooter?

Thank you very much for your reply - very helpful and at least we may be able to get them to take our car off our hands (can't wait to see the back of it!)

We're looking for a larger MPV, not the huge ones, but we have 3 monsters, 2 still in the larger car seats (so need the individual seats in the back if you get what I mean). We also need the extra room for the large double buggy - due to DD2's difficulties she won't be out of the buggy for some time.

We're also due to be travelling to France this year by car for a wedding, so a larger car to cater for the luggage plus kids would be a godsend!

  • If you need to reduce the advance payment, try looking at things like a mondeo.

The mondeo comes with 3 proper seatbelts (easily manage 3 car seats), HUGE boot, better mileage than MPV's and cruise control. You can also get the 2l diesel with an auto gearbox to make driving even easier!!

I'm sure the other manufacturers have similar cars (VW Passat, etc), but I prefer the spec of the mondeo.

The mondeo boot is huge, we can fit a shoprider paris (one of the largest 'portable' scooters) and an xplory (very large pram) in it and still have space round the edges for a family of 5

you should definatly consider the Seat Altea XL, it's got a HUGE boot and has an advance payment of only £500 on a good engine. It looks really nice too which most MPV's don't and it will be a much more reliable care than a citroen.

We have two daughter two small dogs and lots and lots of luggage space needed for when we go camping. This will be the first car we get on Motability hopefully soon but if not then definatly next April when the DLA rules change. The advance payments change every three months but many of the companies will do one or two models of their popular cars with a discounted price that Motability negotiate with them. Particularly the most echonomical engines too.

    Best of luck

  • Hi all,

Thank you all for your replies!

Well, we went to the dealer and decided to order a Ford S-Max.
We looked at the mondeo, and although the boot was big, we needed 3 individual seats in the back, not joined together (if you get what I mean!).

We have to fit 2 large car seats, and a booster seat in, and the 'bench' seats don't seem to be be big enough, and our 7 year old whinges!

As for the advanced payment & trading our car in - well because our car is an R reg, they advised us that we'd be better off selling privately as they wouldn't offer much.
Hubby is getting it sorted and it's going very soon. Must admit I'll be glad to see the back of it!

We've been told a delivery date of 12 weeks for the new car, is that realistic? Or will it possibly be sooner? I can't wait! :D

Delivery will probably depend on whether there is one in stock somewhere, or whether it is a 'new build' fresh from the factory.

If one is in stock it should be pretty quick, but if it is a factory order 12 weeks is a rough guide as they are built in either Germany or Spain and once built take a week or so to get shiipped over.

    Tally
  • Thanks for your reply.

It's being built from scratch - in Portugal apparently so I'm assuming it will be around the 12 week mark ( I wish it was sooner as my car has konked out!)

There was one in stock when we went to order, but as she took our details someone else nabbed it off the system!

Just hoping it gets here before the end of may when we're supposed to go away...
