HP are known over many years to be boneheaded about this issue. I remember a similar issue dating back to about 1986. Generally, the policy of wiping customers data is actually sensible, but just once in a while where customer data is acknowledged to be the problem, they cannot cope.

I do not know what the answer is. I think you need to show both sides what the other are saying. But if you do get anywhere with it, don't send the hard-drive to HP inside the computer. Despite what you may be promised, they will do their damndest to wipe it as I understand it, because this procedure is so deeply etched into them. I would hope for a situation where you send the base unit to HP and the HD to Seagate and the hard drive comes back to you.
