Cowboy clampers forced to return thousands of pounds to trapped drivers in victory for Mail campaign
Motorists will be able to claim back thousands of pounds in compensation from cowboy clampers in a major victory for the Daily Mail.
Home Office minister Alan Campbell last night tabled laws which will, for the first time, give drivers the right to an independent appeal if they are clamped on private land.
A tribunal, which will be funded by charges made against clamping companies, will have the power to order firms to repay in full unfair fines or towing charges.
Significantly, the panel will also be allowed to force the clampers to pay compensation to motorists who incur extra costs because of their actions.
This could range from taxi fares home because their car was clamped, to the cost of hiring a car while their vehicle was recovered from a pound - running to hundreds of pounds each case.

Failing that create a strict set of rules and regulations that all clampers must obey.
This law smacks of one that will just help create money for ambulance chasing compensation seeking lawyers (aren't a lot of the government lawyers?). I can see the advert now, some washed-up actor "Have you been unfairly clamped then call clamper chasers direct ...""One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -

This proposed new law tabled by the Home Office has to be no more than spin. There is not enough time left for passage through both houses for a new law.
Furthermore believing any succesful appeals can be enforced is just a pipe dream. A clamping company can just wind-up and reform under a new name.
I speak with the experience of winning substantial damages through the courts which the clampers easily avoided paying as outlined. Every avenue has been explored with no success. Sum owing is nearly £20,000.
Goodness knows why the activity cannot be just banned as in Scotland.0 -
