Alternative to Oven - £lectricity Saver

I hope my first post on MSE is a useful one to readers...

I've come across a rather useful device that can save time, energy and your hard-earned pounds.

Toasta Bags (from JML) - available in 2- or 4-packs from various retailers (shop around because prices vary).

Essentially they are re-usable bags into which place all kinds of (small) foodstuffs and toast in your ordinary household toaster.

This is an extremely useful and efficient alternative to using your oven in certain circumstances.

Each bag's size is enough to hold a typical supermarket ready-made sandwich, filling and all. Surprisingly my toaster can hold two such bags within.

I can also put 5-6 fish fingers in each bag and cook them through and through (from frozen) in 2 6-minute cycles in my toaster. Nuggets, Pizza slices, french fries, and a whole host of other foodstuffs you'd normally use an over for can be accommodated in these Toasta Bags and be cooked just as well in a fraction of the time and with no need for a pre-warmed oven.

The bags are re-usable a hundred times (according to the instructions - I've used mine nearly as many times and they are still going strong), washable even in a dishwasher, and are waterproof (so the instructions state you can even cook baked beans in your toaster. Though I personally wouldn't try that!).

Its a great alternative for me as whenever I used to use my oven, I would try and cook as many things as possible while the machine was hot, simply because it took it's sweet time to pre-warm. Toasta bags - I wish I had discovered them earlier.:j

  • Nice tip - I've had toasta bags for years but never thought to try them with anything other than a toastie in :) Time to get inventive...!
