Meals for someone with no top teeth!!

Had this with my dad last year, he couldn't manage mince, your dad will have no chewing ability, lower teeth on gums is painful, especially as he will have just had his teeth out.
also a lot of dentists won't pack the teeth with gauze to stop food getting into them as it slows healing i found this out to my detriment when pregnant, had to rush back to the dentist, 60 mile drive the next day to have it packed despite his complaints after a tiny piece of food got stuck and caused some of the worst pain in my life and i couldn't just liquid food for a week as i was 6 months pregnant!
with it being the top teeth it won't be as bad, mine was a lower so i had gravity against me but since they'll be wanting to get his dentures in soon i suspect they won't pack the sockets so i do NOT recommend mince and DO suggest that as much as possible be blitzed so it's very smooth and anything stuck can be washed away with a warm salt water gargle.
quiche would be a suggestion if he'll eat it as that's sooo soft, you can blitz any onion, bacon etc before adding to the egg mixture to make sure it goes down easily. soup really is a must here methinks, it may not be exciting but trust me he does not want the 'excitement' of a piece of food pressing non stop against a raw nerve til you can get him back to the dentist!
good luck to you both0 -
Corned beef hash? Corned beef mashed with potatoes, some carrots for veg intake, onions
Great idea!! I know that's something he will eat as I've bought him a ready-meal from M&S before - supposed to be for 2 people & he's eaten it all himself in one sitting, so he obviously likes it!!x-cupcake-x wrote: »For an alternative breakfast shreddies with hot milk go very mushy
Mmmmmmm, this sounds lovelypatchwork_cat wrote: »Similar vein my DD is due to have braces and has heard at school that you can't eat for a few days - does anyone know if this is so and will it just be soup for a few days, or will she be able to manage soft foods like pasta?
patchwork, hope you get some advice as my DDs will probably be getting braces in the near future so would be useful to know for me too.
The only thing I know about braces is that you have to watch out for spitting when they talk!! :rotfl:0 -
I've not had braces myself but i've heard that they can be very painful when first adjusting to them, so may be why your dd friend only had liquid food for a few days? Anyway, the ortodontist should tell you if she is only allowed liquid food for any particular reason.0

my son has just got braces on monday, day 1 tomato soup, yesterday struggled a bit but ate tortillas cut into pieces, has had pasta, shepards pie . sandwiches if cut into fingers, tried crisps & biscuits as he loves them ...NO!! had paracetamol /brufen day 1 & 2 then ok.
He was really worried before getting them but bless has adjusted very quickly to them. good luck0 -
inaminute, thanks for your good wishes & very good advice
Hot & cold food is not something I would have thought of, but it makes complete sense, especially in the first few days when his gums will be very tender.
He is diabetic so shouldn't have sweet stuff, but I'm pretty sure he's had sugar-free Werthers before so will see if I can get some for him.
Confuzzled, I'm squirming like mad here at your post!! :rotfl: I hate anything to do with teeth/dentists/pain, so I'm probably not the best person to be looking after my Dad!!
I know a recipe for pastry-less quiche (using slices of mozzarella instead) so will suggest that to him, thanks.0 -
Not sure if you have a slow cooker, but if so I do a fab sausage in onion gravy recipe which when cooked in the slow cooker leaves the sausages so soft u could easily mush them on the top of your mouth... serve with the gravy and mash?
If so, bung sausages in s/c (I would usually brown them but seems like a bad idea here!), cover with gravy (onions fried until soft, then sprinkle brown sugar over top until caramalised, add lots of beef stock, and a little flour) and s/c for 7-8 hours.
Hope it all goes alright!Thank you to all the compers!0 -
