Can I record to DVD while watching another channel?

Hello techies, I have a question and would really appreciate any advice.
My lovely missus bought me a portable DVD player for Chistmas that I can take to work and watch DVDs in the van at lunchtime and teabreaks etc.
I want to be able to catch up on programmes I missed on TV so I need a DVD recorder.
Thing is, as I understand it with a DVD recorder you can only watch the programme that is being recorded, I need a way of recording while we watch other stuff.
My current set up is a TV, a cheap Freeview box (only got it so I can watch Sky Sports News, an old Sky box (not Sky +) which we watch everythign else through, and a VHS/DVD combi box.
What are my options? :A

If you have a dvd recorder with freeview tuner you can record one thing with that and watch another station on your TV tuner or freeview box0
