Road markings infront of a driveway

I've just been asked a question about the white box markings we have on the road infront of our driveway, to stop us getting blocked in, and I am wondering if anyone has any info on the topic.

If somebody parks on these, can they be given a ticket by a traffic warden?

We live in an area that's quite bad for parking, and quite often if family can't get parked when visiting, they will park in front of our drive, over the road markings, as the only people they are blocking in is us.

I am quite intrigued myself by this now, anyone know??

  • In my limited understanding of parking rules and regulations it's illegal to park in front of a driveway where there's a dropped curb isn't it?

I thought you could park on a single white line in front of a driveway, so long as you weren't preventing any vehicle parked on the driveway from getting out. This might apply if the driveway were the entire width of a property/garden and if there was only one car in the driveway with lots of room and if you were parking (say) only on some of the white line.

If they can't get into the driveway from the road I don't think an offence has been committed. The offence, as I understood it, was preventing people from accessing the Highway.
  • Those white lines have absolutely no legal standing whatsoever.

That was actually my understand, and I was under the impression that the laws regarding dropped curb were a pretty recent thing.

It's strange we've never considered it before, and we've had family parking on the lines for years with no bother.

So you don't want others parking there, which is understandable.

How will you feel if the law is enforced and a family member is given a ticket?

Tbh, it's not something we've ever thought about, we've never told anybody to park there, it's just something they have done in the past when there's nowhere else to go.

Will def be thinking about it more in the future.

The offence is parking alongside the dropped kerb. Nothing to do with the white line which is only used to highlight the prescence of the dropped kerb.
