Would I be notified of a claim?

Strange question but I am slightly confused with something that has happened recently.

Back in November lat year I reversed into a mobility scooter which had stupidly been parked right behind and was not viewable in any mirrors (long story). Anyway, the scooter only received a crack on the foot floor. I was asked by the scooters insurers to pay then £300 for the damage or have it go through my insurance. I ignored them and to dae have not heard back since.

To cut a long story short, I renewed my car insurance recently and answered no to "have you had any claims....". I received a letter from my new insurers this morning asking for a further £55. When I phoned them they said it's because of a claim that went through my insurance. I said no claim has gone through (hoping that the other people have just dropped the claim) so they are going to get back to me.

In my opinion I was not to blame although I realise that this is not the way the insurers would see it and I have not been notified by my insurers that claim has gone through. I was the one who actually called them to report the accident but have not heard anything since.

Should they have informed me if a claim has actually gone through?

If you reported it to them then they dont have to notify you of the claims handling - many insurers actually write to you when the claim is notified saything that they wont notify you of any updates unless you ask for updates. If they dont send a letter like this then good service would be to keep you informed but is not required.

If you hit a static object then you are to blame for it... a static object is there to be seen and avoided irrespective of it should be there or not.

If the claim had gone through or not you would still have to declare it to your insurers and whilst it may not have had as big an effect on your premium if they hadnt settled it there would still be a loading.

I used to be elephant.co.uk and asked for advice about a drunk who dived on my car. Although no claim was made and the other party never contacted them, they tried to take 3 years ncb off me. After alloot of calls and threats (by me) I finally got them back. Even if no claim is made, your insurers can keep a log of a "potential claim" and this might be whats happend!
