Windows 7 Upgrade and Windows Mail?

If I do an 'in place' upgrade from Vista Home Premium to W7 Home Premium; then, since W7 does not have an email program built in, will Windows Mail and all it's data be removed?
My understanding is that if an in place upgrade is done (as opposed to a clean install), then all the data will be left intact-including Windows Mail?
May be a dumb question but I'd rather be safe than sorrry!

upgrading an OS is asking for problems, its best avoided, always clean install

it appears that you can "transplant" windows mail from vista to W7

  • 64 or 32 bit ?

It IS still there, they've just hidden it - you will need to ' take back ownership ' of the mail prog, and it will work fine see (1) or as Eric Pisch says much much better to start afresh without tons of previous baggage (2)

    .1. WALKTHROUGH

Winmail aka Vista is in Win7 in two places :
    - Program Files, and;
    - Program Files (x86)
Now forget all about Program Files (x86)

.1. GoTo Folder Options / show all files & un-hide protected O/S files
.2. Unpack the ' take ownership ' rar and run it
.3. Right click the Program Files ' Windows Mail ' folder and ' take ownership '
.4. Go into the Program Files ' Windows Mail ' folder and take ownership of each of the files
.5. Delete Rename or ' back up the Program Files ' Windows Mail ' folder and it's contents
.6. Put the contents of ' WMail 64bit ' into the empty Program Files ' Windows Mail ' folder
    .7. Now repeat No 4
.8. Create a ' shortcut ' or pin one to your cluttered taskbar
    .9. Reboot
    - - - Now set up your account details and you are away !!!

REM if you want to clean up the CSini that have appeared all over the place repeat No 1

Don't thank me buy me beer - a matched pair of Newcastle Brown [ s ] Ale will do it.

    .2. Windows Live Installer

.a. get a copy of an application called wlsetup-web from Microsoft
.b. it offerers 7 different applications one of which is mail, tick the box called mail
.c. you may also want to install the excellent photo gallery & Movie Maker

The above are all free, while you're there get Microsoft Security Essentials, also free and save on the price of a virus checker.

    Hope this helps !

Thanks for the replies, but it's not my choice here, I'm doing it for a friend and he won't do a clean install, only an in-place upgrade.
    It's 32 bit.
What I'm still not clear about is whether doing a in place upgrade will remove Windows Mail or not?

I've never tried it my friend but I'll bet a case of beer that you will loose the lot, Microsoft want to DRIVE everyone screaming against their will onto Windows Live Products - easy - take permissions [ ownership ] away and you achieve your corporate objective and pay nothing for coding costs.
