Help - Advice needed, Car broken into, belongings stolen

Hi,

My car was broken into last night. It was parked in a Goals Centre car park whilst I was playing football. Police informed and crime reference number attained.

6 or 7 cars were all broken into.

My Window was smashed... Wallet, Coat, Phone, Trainers, Jeans, Top, 8gb memory stick, bag, plus watch from glove compartment were all taken. Approx value £350.

Bag containing items and coat were stuffed under seat.

My probelm...

Car insurance only covers £100 for personal possesions plus I would have to pay £250 excess to get window fixed. Other option is just to make a glass claim which would cost £75 and there would be no money for my personal posessions.

I've checked my contents insurance, and I'm not covered. Apparently I needed to take out the optional extra of "Personal possesions".:mad:

Obviously I've learnt some lessons... Dont leave anything in your car however well hid they are and dont be such a tight !!!! when setting up your insurance policies etc etc!!!:mad:

I think I have no other option to go ahead and make a glass claim.

HOWEVER, do I have any other options to recuparate some of the costs for my personal posessions?
Can I make a claim against the Goals centre?
Can I make a claim for being a victim of crime?

I feel like i'm clutching at straws :(:(

Thanks for any help

Ben

Your only (slim) hope is the criminal gets identified and you sue for your losses.

Realistically, just get your glass repaired.

It shouldn't affect your NCD (though I do know Swiftcover won't award you any for this year if you are with them), but will be on your history and have to be declared if you change insurers over the next 3 - 5 years.
  • Hi Quentin,

Kind of thought that would be the case.

My no claims are protected so at least that wont be a problem.

What an a-r s e, I can't beleive the idiots who do this!!

I'm basically out of pocket of £400 + the £280 I paid for car insurance!

It just makes me think why I bother with insurance. I paid £280 just so I can pay them another £75 to fix my window.

This is a very simplistic view of the matter - but this is so frustrating!!

    Thanks

    Obviously I've learnt some lessons

Do you really need to take items like your watch & wallet with you (as you're clearly not using them when playing football).
Could you just take a bit of cash and use the clock on your phone.
Get a cheap tracksuit from JJB sports.

Yes I know it's annoying, but 350 quids worth of stuff does sound rather a lot if you have no secure storage.
  • lisyloo your absolutely right.

Normally, its the car keys and the car - thats it - no worries.

It just so happended that last night I had a call to meet a friend after footy to watch the footy at the pub on the way home. So i threw a change of clothes in my rucksak grabbed my jacket (which had my wallet, phone and memory stick in) and jumped in the car.

It was obvioulsy not very bright, leaving this all in the car stuffed under a seat but also very unfortunate that it happend to be the night that 6 or 7 cars were broken into at the car park.

I will just add that 3 or 4 of the cars had nothing taken.

Yes I will learn , indeed!

My annoyance is mainly aimed at the s -c - um who stole my gear.
