What rate of VAT are they charging you?

I know the question you are asking here.....:)

But the dealer has no say in the VAT rate.

What Lorian is sating is remember VAT has also gone up from 15% to 17.5% on any monies still owing after the 1st January so you will need to factor that in too.

By the way - what make and model of car is it, because others may be able to confirm they haven't been charged the £95 on their scrappage purchases. I Certainly didn't on my Hyundai.

Hintza - was trying to raise the subject softly!

, now that my new car is about to arrive, they're also telling me that they're going to charge me an extra 2% to use my credit card. Seems to me that they're using the scrappage scheme to earn themselves a few extra bucks.

You weren't to know. The dealer should have really told you. I bet they have it listed in their T&C's in the smallprint to cover themselves though (worth a check).

They appear to have told the OP before the car arrived.

It would have been nice if it had been mentioned at the point the contract was signed?

Hi again. you're all being so helpful - thank you:A. The car I'm buying is a Hyundai i10. the dealer told me, when I paid the deposit in November, that I would have to pay the increased VAT come January/February - fair enough, I thought.

I've just checked my agreement (I signed it more than two months ago, so I need to read it again) and there is no mention at all in the small print about an excess for paying the balance by credit card. In addition, I paid the deposit by credit card and there was no quibble at the time, or an excess, or any mention of an excess.

I've also just nipped out to speak to a chum about her new car - bought recently via scrappage. Not only did she have no scrappage fee, she has one year's free credit.

    Food for thought here ...
    Nice to save.

Nice but hardly essential. Most people don't buy new cars on credit cards.

    I bet your " chum " didn't buy a Hyundai i10.:)

You should not have to pay any fee for the scrappage scheme, take the matter up with Hyundai, it seems like the dealer is trying it on.

No point in going on about the Credit Card charge, they will just ask you for a Debit Card instead, on which there will be no charge of course, that really is your choice.

I bought a hyundai on scrappage, I didn't pay a £95 fee. Defintely worth a go at getting that back.

I paid the deposit by CC with no fee and luckily was told at the time if I paid the balance by CC I would have to pay the fee.

Hyundai customer services can be contacted below, you can ask them what the £95 was for, they usually reply within the day.

Remember to select "customer service" in the approiate drop-down box.

Thanks, Lorian. I'll email Hyundai next.

Interestingly, I've just spoken to the dealer again and they're now all fluffyness  It seems that I'll be able to pay the balance by cc after all. Just shows what a bit of sabre rattling can do.

Re the £95, they're saying that other traders also charge a scrappage fee, but it's hidden. ;) I wonder if there's anyone out there in the motor trade who could comment on that?
    Nice to save.

Tbh I dont see what you can do.

You agreed to a £95 admin fee for them. Its maybe not in the scrappage terms but is it explicitly not allowed?

    I am guessing not.
