im killing it! help!

I have a Phalaenopsis orchid in my kitchen window - had it for approx a year now and its been fine, flowered and looked lovely.

BUT now i think its dying. My DD knocked the plant over and it came out of the clear pot - Ive put it back in gently being careful not to damage any of the roots - It is still in the bark/charcol mix

The leaves are a nice healthy looking green, the flower is budding and attempting to open but then they go brown/black and drop off.

I usually water tha plant sparadically and sometimes use an orchid feeder (not often!) but i dont "spritz" the plant and have been watering it like i would any other plant

I RREALLY dont want this orchid to die

please help

Firstly see if its roots are wet... they shouldn't really be.
If it is wet, take it out of its outer fancy pot and let it drain for a couple of hours..
It only needs an eggcup amount of water every week.

If it is too dry the flowers will just go crispy brown and drop off.
Orchids are also very sensitive to drafts, so move it away from any doorways or windows which could give it even a tiny chill. These will make the flowers drop off.
  • Thank you for that,

I've took it out the pot and let it dry, have now moved it into our living room for the time being, It has alwas been in the window so i dont know if its because the weather has turned that the flowers started to drop off.

I have put a note on the plant to tell people to stop watering it! (I fear my mum has been sneaking it water when im at work - she comes and does my house work lol)

Will see how i go :(

I have one of these orchids and kept it in my front room for ages and it didnt particularly like it. I've tried moving it to the bathroom windowsill, its warm (ish) in there when the heating is on but gets quite cold at night. I water it when i remember it ( from water left in the kids school drink bottles!) and never feed it anything, its been in the same compost and pot for over a year and its now thriving. After flowering this year I left the flower stem on it to die naturally and its since sent out 2 lovely new leaves which are growing at a rate of knots. Maybe yours is the same and would prefer a new location????

  • our house is freezing atm tbh - we're in an assosiation house who take the moneky! we are the only ones in the whole area who have dodgy windows from years ago (my mum had the same windows and they was condemned in 1984!) every other property got nice new windows a few years back, ours didnt, now seen a few having double glazing (ours isnt high on the list) so EVERY window has a horrible draft (spelling?) coming through it so i think no matter where ollie the orchid goes he isnt going to like it right now :(

Im going to see how he gets on in the next few days and then start panicing again :(
