When should I cancel everything?

Like Sky, BT, Home insurance etc?

We should be completing by 10th February. Do you have to give a months notice - I presume so?

Thanks!

Very difficult without knowing what your sky contract says. If just transferring everything to new property then can you not just port them to your next house. Call BT tell them you're moving and they should be able to get you set up (or install a line for free at the moment). Guess you'll want to take your existing number? Call house insurance provider and get a new quote for new house. Call sky and see what they say....simple!
  • Thanks Delmar - I will do.

Just didnt fancy ringing all of the companies twice - Sky customer service makes my blood boil! I wont be taking any of the utilities with me I dont think. I'll call them and see what they say.

I know when we moved last year with Virgin I rang them in advance and got put through to their housemoves bods (who thankfully aren't an overseas call centre so you can actually get some sense outta 'em). The way their computer system has to do house moves is to cancel your old contract and set up a new one in your new place (conveniently re-starting your minimum tie-in grrrr) - but he booked in the switch off at the old place and a reinstallation appointment at the new place all in one call.

Insurance etc I think I rang up just before the fact and they set it to switch over on the move date automatically... daft things like pet insurance etc I left till after I'd moved - just made a huge list of everything I had with my address on and the day we got the phone put back on (we had about a fortnight's overlap where we had both houses so we could do things gradually - and maintain some sanity... but we rent), I just gritted my teeth and rang through all the other bits and bobs.

I kept the list handy for the few weeks before we moved and just added to it as things occurred to me that I needed to call up and change over - then looked up the phone number/policy number etc and had it all written down.

OK good luck with it. I guess it's just a case of sounding them out and seeing what the options are. If you're not going with BT go for a bundled phone / broadband option with Talk Talk or Tiscali and you'll pay less then £20 per month all in (exchange permitting).

All the best with the move. We're looking to exchange any time now so starting to get nervous!

We went through this a month or so ago, FYI this is what we found:

BT need minimum two weeks to cancel. They did completely !!!! ours up though so if you don't get your final bill within about 10 days ring up and check they did in fact cancel it.

Our contents insurance (LV) didn't need very long but did charge us a cancellation fee. They also cocked our cancellation up!

British Gas and EDF (both quarterly billing) cancelled on the spot when we rang on our moving day to give final meter readings. One of them I was able to pay the balance off by debit card on the on the phone, the other sent a final bill to my new address. No !!!! ups there at all, probably easier as we were not on DD.

AOL broadband, they can put the order through to cancel on the spot but it takes up to 5 days to cancel the line, so you may end up paying for a few extra days; but if you cancel early you might be without broadband for the last few days.

Thames water didn't need much notice, in fact I think I did it all online, didn't actually talk to anyone. We told them the day we were moving and then got a nice refund into our bank account automatically a couple of weeks later, as our rates are paid over less than a year.

Council tax, didn't need any notice, we were sent through a cheque refund after about 3 weeks.

Just make sure they all get your new address so any outstanding bills or letters get to the right place.

Finally - if you're setting up a redirection with Royal Mail, I would do it at least 2 weeks in advance of your move date. And don't necessarily assume you can do it online, it failed for us and we had to take the form into the post office.

Do you not have the new house insured already? You're normally at risk from exchange of contracts.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Funny you should say that - I've not 15 minutes ago had a call from our solicitor to say we need to show proof of insurance cover.

So I've just done a search and found a policy I want and emailed it to the solicitor. Once we exchange, I can pay the premium and be covered from the day I pay so its all fine.

Thanks everyone for your help - its good to read your comments.
