Fixing stair runner to stairs?

Options
Hi All

Any advice welcome on fixing stair runner to staircase. I am sanding down and painting edges of steps, then I would like to put a runner up ( 12 steps ) I will then put stair rods on top but I need to know the best, neatest and safest way of fixing.

Thankyou in advance
I am only trying to help

    Hi,

We had a stair runner fitted and from what I saw he fitted underlay then a gripper to the back of the step you stand on and then used a tool (looked like a bolster chisel) to bang the carpet into the join of the step and riser. He stapled it at the bottom of the bottom step and top of the top step, if that makes any sense?

Has your carpet been whipped at the edges or are you turning over the edges and glueing them? We had ours glued as we didnt like the look of the whiped edges but it hasnt stuck properly in some places.

I looked at stair rods but the carpet fitter said they they are really just for show and dont really hold the carpet in place? Not sure if thats true or not?

This is what ours looks like without rods if you wanted to save a few pennies:

I love the way it looks now, it was awful before, 70 years worth of paint and varnish!
  • Agree with lisal0u, the rods do absolutly nothing to hold the carpet in (the stairrods brochure will even tell you so) Personally I'd have the carpet whipped (between £2.00 and £5.00 per linear metre) have it fitted, then decide whether you would visually like stair rods. It's up to you of course but you can always add the rods on later, but the screw holes will be there if you decide you don't like them and take them out.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

Paul I agree with you about getting the carpet fitted! Its deinately an art! Especially on the stairs!

I dont think it would cost much to have it fitted either. Think it took our fitter a couple of hours and it hasnt moved an inch since he did it!

Ours didn't use staples, had gripper on the back of step, was fitted in two parts. obviously underlay as well. Had edges whipped and we flipping love it. Going to get pewter rods just for asthetics. As you did, we sanded and painted the sides of the stiars. See below :)
Work pc playing up, will stick a pic up when I get back from a meeting in a bit
  • Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, will probably get it fitted if not too expensive, the stair rods will only be for show.

Please don't fit it yourself, it's not that straightforward and although now I'd consider myself pretty reasonable at DIY definitely wouldn't try it! We had edges whipped. Hopefully pics working now......
