Every one gets a non means tested bursary according to their age. If they are over 25 it is about 6500 pa under 25 is about 5500. People are also entitiled to additional means tested allowances for things like childcare, other adult dependants, single parenthood etc etc.

  • I am a speech and language therapy student and I get a whopping £313 a month that covers basic living expenses only and nothing else. I am a mature student (35) and have a top up student loan of £2100 a year to live on. The department who deals with sorting out the bursery are not easy to deal with. Last year it took about 3 months from the start of the course to get anything out of them and they are a nightmare to contact. It took us weeks and weeks to even get through on the phones to them. If you are going to uni this year, please make sure you have some savings to cover your basic expenses - books, food, bills etc for three months otherwise you will be in severe trouble.

I am sorry to hear you had trouble and saving for such times is always prudent. My nursing bursary was sorted out before I started Uni and I had a payment in my account on the first day I started and never had any probs. I think the nursing bursaries are run differently as we don't get student loans (in wales).

Hi - nursing bursaries are different. Contrary to what someone else wrote, the nhs bursary for physios is MEANS TESTED. I'm just going into my 3rd year on a physio degree. They take into account your age, dependents, parents income (depending on your age - if you're over 25 you're classed as independent), your partner's income (if you're married or have lived with them for a certain amount of time). You can also apply each year for a half student loan £2005 ish. And unis also have Access to Learning funds if you're struggling.

Good luck - you'll love the course. Which uni are you going to?

i get basic bursary £5837 per year and its hopefully rising 2.5 % in september, at the mo it works out as £486 per month, every third friday, so some months are five weekers which is a real pain!

worth it though loving the course!

    good luck xx
