Core i5, i7 and core2duo. dual core difference

Options
Good evening,
Why should one prefer corei5, i7 over the normal dual core, core2duo, quad core
etc. Does it matter to Graphic design work or any thing else? What are the main differences in performance.

They are just newer and faster, depends what graphic design work you will be doing to be honest. Difference in performance would be less slow down if you are doing computationally expensive tasks such as rendering. However another huge factor should be your graphics card choice. The best thing to do is have a budget and then build a balanced machine against that. No point putting a 400 quid processor in with a 30 quid graphics card.

You can compare the performance of processors for different benchmark tests using this table.

I was just wondering if I should spend a bit more on i5,i7 or stick to the norm. Some Quadcore machines are cheaper now, with nvdia gfx card should suffice. Not sure about future proof and upgrading.

This set of comparisons is also pretty good (choose two processors from on the drop downs and click View Comparison) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?b=2

The Core i processors will eventually replace the Core 2's.

Its difficult balance to get, I have for the last 3 PC's gone for spending a fortune around £1000 my new i7 laptop arrives tomorrow. How is this ever money saving? well the last 2 machines have lasted 6 years each, with up grades of ram and a new hard drive after 4 years in both. I buy the top processor type but the speed level below the top (you pay a real premium for the current "fastest processor")
