How long would this work for on a rising main?

Any ideas?

    I don't like this mumbo jumbo stuff but I do live in a house where one was installed before we arrived and it does seems to work. That's compared with our last house (in the same area) which had very hard water. I hadn't really thought about this until just now but we don't have water marks on the stainless steel sink. No idea how it works - the science seems a little dodgy.
