  • Well, Trading Standards have still to get back to me (so still not sure of their official line), however I have a result! I sent my letter to the company and today received a phone call. I was unable to answer the call so have a message that tells me: my account has been credited in full, the request for payment was made in error (she holds her hands up to it!) - I had asked for a quote, I had not asked for the work to be done, and she is sending a letter out today to confirm this in writing!

    Yay!

    Thanks for all your input

    On the internet you can be anything you want.It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

    A great result. Well done.
  • Con! He didn't tell you he'd charge for it, so why should you. No paperwork, no signature, no proof. Next time that happens offer to make them a cuppa, if they take you up on the offer, bill them for £100.

    Me: Erm I'm not sure, but if you don't mind?

    I personally think the company concerned is taking the urine; but all sides have 2 stories. You did agree, and didn't stop the guy saying no don't do any work.

    There are rogue customers out there; my story;
    My advert says free estimates, go to look at faulty shower, after 15 mins of checking - shower off, check consumer unit, switch off located faulty item. Said it will cost £40 including new switch- I've got one in the van and I could do it now if you like. Customer says my cousin is an electrician i'll get him to do it when he returns from working on the rigs, I just wanted you out to find out what was wrong.

    From that point, if there is fault finding there is a labour charge, a free quote is how much is it to wire my shower , outside light etc, not can you find out what is wrong and give me the option not to pay me.

    I do tell customers there will be a charge before anything like this is done, and give them the option whether to continue. I find most people are fine if you are up front about things.

    Legally you should offer £40, in full and final payment- stating banking cheque deems acceptance of content of letter, otherwise tell them to take you to court.
    baldly going on...
  • Well, some nice plumbers that have been round for free quotes to replace my boiler tried to see if they can fix my boiler, or see what might be the problem, so I don't have to replace it, no obligation - didn't try it on with me that way ;) hehe.
