should I SORN my car

Not sure what to do.
Car was in an accident on 4 Dec. Engineer's report on 6 Jan has declared it a total loss. Tax is due on 31 Jan but it won't be back on the roads and I'm in the process of sending the V5 etc to my insurer.
DVLA don't know it's been written off other than a phone call to them. They've said to send a letter to let them know.
As the end of the month is looming and I don't know how long it will take the DVLA to action my letter if I send it tomorrow - is there any harm in SORN'ing the car? As a back up so I don't get a fine for non-renewal of tax?
I feel it's the sensible thing to do but don't want to do the wrong thing.

Just another thought (wow 2 in one hour, must go lie down)
as there is only 5 days left till end of the month prob be best to do it online

I'm a big fan of the online tax renewal - no more queueing in the post office!!
Just SORN'ing it now, I don't want to end up with a fine half way through next month if the letter goes astray or sits in a tray for days on end."Stay Wonky":D

oh.......
"Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.
You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee."
Perhaps they did something to my record after my call? Or the engineer's report triggered something?
Oh well, I'll stick the letter in the post anyway."Stay Wonky":D

Do no harm still to declare SORN at PO between now and weekend, at least you know it's done0 -
true and I do have to go on Saturday to send my documents to the insurer by recorded delivery.

This will more than likely be because the insurance company will have notified DVLA off the write off.
If you still have V5C then send section 9 (yellow) to DVLA with the name/address of insurance company plus date vehicle left your possession.
If you don't have V5C then just send a letter stating the above plus reg mark, make/model and your details. Send by recorded if you wish. Send to DVLA,Swansea,SA99 1AR.
You should get confirmation within 2-4 weeks that you are no longer the keeper (chase it up if you do not get letter back!). There is no need to SORN it as you are informing of the disposal.
