brought a sofa from littlewoods in sep 08, just before christmas noticed that the springs went through the bottom. when i contacted littlewoods they said i was out side the guarentee period of a year and that i should have purchased furniture protection. and there was nothing that they could do.
after complaining again, they said they could someone out to have a look but would charge me £45, and there could me a futher charge of £80-100 if it could not be repaired within an hour, told them not to bother.
what can i do now, i didnt expect the springs to come through after a year,
please help me!!!!

I had a similar complaint with Empire, I had owned the sofa just under a year though, they told me that as it was under 12 months old, the manufacturers warranty is valid. They told me that they would send someone out, free of charge, however, if they decided that the manufacturers were not at fault, I would be charged £45. So I told them to come, confident that I was right. They charged me £45 and told me to go away. I had a tantrum and sent a very long letter to their head office (Shop Direct Group), quoting the fit for purpose laws etc, demanded my £45 back and told them to cancel the insurance I had taken out nearly a year previous, and reimburse me, as it obviously didn't come into affect until after the first year.
They did not respond, so I resent the letter and contacted consumer direct. They put me in touch with trading standards, who also contacted them on my behalf. 3 months later I finally received a phonecall. I was told to dispose of the sofa, they refunded me 90% of the purchase price saying 10% was taken off for wear and tear, and they refunded me my £45.
I suggest, if you feel that strongly about it, definitely contact consumer direct and be prepared to fight, at the end of the day they can only refuse to fix or refund, so what have you got to lose by being difficult?Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
30lb lost of 30lb by June 2012 :j:j:j (80lb overall goal)0
