Hi here,
I hope I am posting this in the right place.
Does anyone have any information as to the procedure when someone dies and there is no money available for funeral etc?
My dad just died and we have no money and he has no savings or policies.
regards

It would normally get paid for by your local council, just in the same way as if no relatives can be found or the person has no valuable possessions to sell to fund it. but it would just be a standard funeral or maybe even a cremation depending whats more cost effective in your area.
Im not sure who you will need to contact but im sure if you phone the council they will point you in the right direction.
If your on certain benefits you can also apply to the social fund for funeral payments http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Bereaved/DG_10018660

Thanks for your replies,
I will check out the links you gave me but I am not on benefits so the social fund probably won't help.
The local Council are completely inept. My sister and I have spent hours on the phone over the past couple of days trying to find out what to do and all they do is pass us from one department to the next. No one there seems to know what day it is let alone what to do in these situations.

Hi OP and so sorry to hear of your loss. You might also be able to find out further information if you call a local funeral director - they will have a wealth of information available to them and they will be much more sympathetic than your local council. Also, if your father was in receipt of a private pension there may be some money available from them as a funeral grant or death benefits.0

Hi there,
I have been in contact with a local funeral director and he has confirmed what my sister was told in that if one of us is working then the Social Fund will not help. However
I have found some policies and the funeral director said he is sure the policies will cover his costs and he will also accept a very small deposit while we wait for the Insurance company to pay out. So it looks as though things are not quite as desperate as we thought they were.
