Freezer in the garage - is it ok?

Options
We've just bought a chest freezer to go in the garage so i can make the most of batch cooking and baking etc. However, when i was telling a friend of mine she said that she has had to bring hers into the conservatory because it is too cold in the garage - has anyone else had problems? Don't dare switch it on - let alone start to fill it. Anyone got any advice?

  • how can a freezer be too cold lol does she mean so cold it just stopped working?
we had a freezer in the garage for years no problems at all should be fine.
  • hi,
you may get the opposite problem if you bring it into your conservatory, as in the summer they get so hot that the freezer has to work even harder....

Perhaps she meant it was too cold in the garage when she went to get things out??
No problems with a freezer in the garage in my experience providing it (the garage) is water tight..

My parents and sister had there's outside in an outhouse and garage for years - no problems. However I know someone who's washing machine was in the garage and that froze in the recent cold weather.

Yes you meant to get freezers that are designed for this

That said I have mine in garage and although it did have a problem this was a design fault

I do have heating in garage on very low

I also have washer, tumble in there to

Your question does make sense to me. I had a friend who never used his kitchen. It was in an old house and freezing cold. He called in the repair man as his fridge was not working properly. The repairman told him that his kitchen was too cold for it to function properly. Whether this was a true assessment, I don't know, but it might be worth protecting your freezer in some way when the weather is particularly cold?
  • Have had a chest freezer in my garage for nearly 3 years now and never had any problems with it working during this time.
