Wireless again!!!!and weird ip addresses

Options
on a previous thread yesterday I was given advice on how to try and solve my networking prob. Namely disabling the belkin software client. Tried and tried and to be honest gave up. did get connected to the network. Now I have another prob, the ipod touch now wont connect, and throws up an obscure ip address
169.254.209.52 which I looked up and have no idea where it is coming from!!! I think it may be interfering with the belkin network card, is that posssible? also I did have amessage on 2 computers saying there was some sort of ip confusion, I think it was saying that something was using the same ip address, could the router be the prob in not assigning the correct ip address to each connecting device. This seemed to be cured for a while when I rebooted the router. Please if anyone can give any idea what is going on I would be most grateful.

169.254.xxx.yyy is the dummy address which is given out when for some reason, you can't be given a real address (like 192.168.1.65) on your local network.

Your router should be set up to use DHCP, which will give out several useful addresses to each client, to the extent that you can usually forget about IP addresses, since 'they always work' when you connect a PC or laptop.

Think the wirelees router is the prob, Took the ipod touch to a friends house and it connected straight away to their network, and stayed connected. My friend had another wireless router and lent it to me. Brought it home plugged it in. ipod touch connected, laptop connected,(laptop was searching for ip address on original router and wouldn't connect) desktop (ethernet) connected and desktop wireless pc connected. going to leave this running for a few days to see if any glitches then going to contact belkin for new router!

It could be the config - is it set up to allow any device to connect? With most routers you can set them up to only allow "known" devices to connect based on the device MAC.

What about the password for encryption - you didn't mention that at all and some kit comes with a predefined password to make it secure out of the box.

Sorry I should have said My wireless router has been configured for five years or more, it is only within the last few weeks I have been having probs connecting, I tried to eliminate all sorts of issues, eg firewall etc. when I rebooted it things burst into life only to go t*ts up shortly after. The router didn't seem to be holding its settings. I am using the laptop now and it connected straight away no issuses whereas earlier with the belkin router it was saying acquiring ip address and not connecting. the Ipod touch is still connected and hasn't got the silly ip address. fingers are crossed, coz it was driving me insane.!!!!
special thanks to busenbust who helped yesterday.

    Could it be overheating?

Might be worth changing the channel too - perhaps a neighbour has just got one and it's on the same channel as yours.

Over heating ...maybe.... neighbours .... no,
I did change the channel from 11 to auto and when I checked to see exactly what channel it had chosen it was no 6, and was having the same prob with that channel reverted back to 11. so no dont think it was the channel. thanks for all the suggestions. appreciated TrishaM

Have you tried updating the firmware?

Also had a similar problem when a neighbour put in a new system and thought that switching from the default setting of Channel 10 to Auto would solve the problem. It didn't until eventually I changed the setting to Channel 4 - basically at random. No probs since.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

I doubt its a firmware issue, over heating etc. its a dhcp issue not given you a lan ip but its give you a private one instead maybe the security key or so is entered wrong which would cause this.

the router seemed to be having trouble assigning ip addresses, or acquiring them, but the connected devices where showing up on the router page with an ip address, I also think the router was not holding the password all the time, coz there where times when I was trying to connect and retyped the password in to the router and then got a connection. only to lose it the next time I tried to connect.
