Foreign cheques: Bank charges

Hi everyone.
I recently paid an Australian cheque into my NatWest current account.
The bank informed me that they would take a 'cut' of this for the converstion, but could not say how much. I do not know if it is a set fee or a percentage of the value.
Is there any way to find out, and is it possible to claim this money back?
Any feedback greatly appreciated!
