Digital SLR help?!

I'm looking to upgrade from my 35mm SLR to digital. Very much an amateur and would love any help or advice about buying. I'll be mostly taking action shots, or indoors so one with a high continuous speed, fast multi point auto focus and large buffer would be good. Image stabalisation would be useful too. I've got a limited budget of about £350 which needs to include lens so I'll be looking at a very basic model or buying second hand but just starting out so that would be fine. I know they've come down in price loads so I'm hopeful!
Any photography buffs out there with any advice??

check out avforums. in their classifieds there is someone selling a canon 350d plus some accessories for less than £250.

I got a Nikon D40 recently, and I love it. It is the basic Nikon DSLR but it does everything you would expect of an amateur SLR. Second hand with a couple of lenses and bag should fit in your budget - I believe mine came from ebay (was Xmas pressie last year!) and was a couple of hundred.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

Try Ebay for used Canon 350D or Canon 20D. Don't be fooled by megapixels - stuff too many on a small sensor and it's very bad. For example, a Canon 40D (older model) is better than a 50D.
Get a 350D for £160 or 20D for slightly more (takes 5 pics a second).
Then get something (if budget tight) like a Canon 28-105 (£100 ebay).
Nikon have improved their game and Canon or Nikon current models are good ....BUT.....if buying older models, get Canon as older Nikon models are poor.0 -
Thanks for all the tips - just the sort of advice I was after - going to go researching!

If you want cheap and image stab you won't get it in a Nikon or Canon Sony is probably your best bet if thats what you want. You can get some cheapish second had fast prime lenses for Nikons but they wont focus on the cheaper models.0

Hi, if you're looking for new, then you could have a look at the Olympus E420. I bought one last year and love it. Bought this from FotoSense .

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. if you want new and the benefits in having a local place in case of a problem then you can do a lot worse than try jessops if you buy it in a certain manner.
first go to the website and spec up exactly what you want - you often get a good deal if you get a package rather than the body (personally I recommend getting a UV filter as a minimun, due to the fact that it's a lot cheaper to replace a filter than a lens).
next do a search for jessops voucher codes and try entering them into the website (they pretty much let you try then see the effect they have on the overall bill).
So now you have a price you're happy with for the kit you want. The delivery charges with jessops are quite high so lets get rid of them. Jessops have a facility whereby you can reserve the stuff instore but if you buy them online you pay web prices. So select pick up in store, get your coat on and go get your camera.
btw in terms of speed, I bought a sony DSLR using the process above and by the time I had shut the computer down and got my jacket on I'd got the text informing me the order was ready for pick up.

Okay, I think I'm getting closer to deciding. I'm torn between Nikon and Cannon, or maybe the sony but a bit worried as the image stabaliser is in the camera not the lens and I've heard thats not as good.
Can anyone advise me about lens for each? I'm trying to weigh it up on lens availibity and cost. Tending towards the Nikon D3000 or D40.
There seems to be good deals on the sony a200 at pixel store though.
Maybe I'm not that close to decinding after all!
