MYsterious credit in bank account dilemma!

I know you have already correctly said you are returning it..Kittenonthekeys wrote: »I wrote to my bank to inform them and their reply was to please let them know if I wished to refund it and they would make the necessary arrangements. No reference as to whether I was legally obliged to do so.
I do recognise there is a moral obligation but my question is, is there a legal one?
My personal opinion is that In view of the fact that I spent considerable time on this and made every possible effort to follow the correct channels by reporting this error which had occurred through no fault of my own, and was subsequently (mis?)informed by my bank that the money was mine to spend (a right I happened to choose not to exercise) I can't help feeling it is now the bank's responsibility to reimburse the originator.
What would you do and what's your view?
The money don't belong to you and if you spent it you would be guilty of an offence. The person who accidental transferred the money could chase you legally.
Its nothing to do with your bank - they don't know who or why the money was paid into your account.. only that it was credited to the account that the other bank said it was due..
Just enjoy the fact that you got a few weeks interest on it, which you get to keep..
Regards

I'd send it back. You've done well out of the interest already

Already said I was sending it back and am happy to do so but we're not exactly talking retiring to the French Riviera on the interest front - about £3 if my calculations are correct. Doesn't even cover my phone calls and time taken to sort this out. :eek:0 -
lol, I stopped reading half way down, sorry. I know it isn't much, but hell, it's a trip to Costa for free if you look at it that way.
Or you could leave it in a 3.5% savings account for 30 years and enjoy the £8.56 when you retire

...now this is getting really exciting because that £8.56 means I'll be able to have a sandwich with my cappuccino. As long as interest rates don't go down again. Retirement can't come too soon for me! :money:0 -
how did they know it was you it went to?0

how did they know it was you it went to?
It was someone who had bought something from me online, and paid via online bank transfer a couple of years ago. The name did appear on my statement but after all that time it didn't ring a bell and I'd forgotten all about them.
This could happen to anyone and as I've been far more lucky in love than I ever was with money
I knew I could never keep it but it was nice to dream... 0
