BR tax code?

Just because you are self employed you dont pay 20% on everything - you still have an allowance.
How can you be in reciept of JSA if are currently not working because of injury?
If your tax code were to be affected by your bankruptcy then your code would be NT.
Ring HMRC regarding the codes as previously advised as even with the JSA an amount of your pension you are under the threashold to pay tax.:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Yes I know I still get an allowance, I pay tax at 20% on everything after that.

I'm not 'officially' working due to an injury, I'm not working because I can't find any work I can do at present. This may become official though later if the injury continues. Income based JSA rather than Income support was the benefit the advisor thought most appropriate for me

My understanding is that my tax code would more likely be one with 'no allowance' with my tax going to creditors.

Yes I've wrote asking for the reasons this has been done.0 -

I have received the same letter as well however when I called she said you don't get taxed on JSA. When you start a new job your new employer will put on there books your employed then you will get a tax free allowance of £4760 on code 476L before being taxed 20% if below £37K. That's how I understand it.0

Thanks but I still don't get this at all.
You seem to be saying that if I start work PAYE then I'll get a normal single persons tax allowance, but I'll be taxed at 20% on anything after that.
Is that the normal amount that one is taxed at working PAYE? I know it's the normal amount for a self employed person working in the construction industry.
You also seem to say that I won't be taxed my JSA at all. So what's the point of these ****** letters from HMRC about the 'BR' tax code.0 -
As you have already been told the HMRC has had a problem recently with incorrect tax codes being sent out.
You can check this quite easily by calling HRMC and asking them why you have been assigned this tax code.
Which is on my list of things to do tomorrow as I received this BR tax code letter.
Apparently we are not alone and the advice is call and if it's incorrect get this or a new tax code in writing.0 -

Hi there
sorry to jump in on your thread, but while on the subject of tax codes I have not got a clue how this works, but my hubby been on income based JSA since DEC 2008 (hopefully he will have some luck with another follow up interview this coming Monday for a new job) fingers crossed.
Anyway about a fortnight ago he was also sent a code of BR.
How do we know if this is correct or not?
I do not work as I care for my autistic son full time, and its been well over year since hubby been unemployed.
Thanks. The one and only "Dizzy Di"

If he has no other income then its likely to be a mistake.
Ring the tax office and they will rectify.

No other income just JSA.
I claim for Carers allowance cos I care full time for my son, does that make any difference on hubbys tax code at all?
