Advice - renting with poor credit history but no CCJ's

Hi, I'm looking for any thoughts / advice.
We currently own a 1 bed apartment but now that we have a baby need something bigger - we can't afford to pay anymore so would like to rent.
We viewed a lovely 2 bed apartment today through an agent, but we will need to have a credit search done on us.
We have not been made bankrupt and have no CCJ's, however I was made redundant in Nov'08 and was unemployed for 5months. During this time I couldn't afford to pay my credit cards and loans and defaulted on all of them. We never missed a mortgage payment - only payments on unsecured debts.
Do we have any chance of renting through an agent - I was going to be up front and tell them - or do we have no option but to find a private landlord who might be more understanding?

I was in your position a while back and offered the agent 6 months rent in advance (2 year lease) and explained why (poor credit rating) he did not seem to mind and i got the flat! honesty is the best policy IMHO0

You can also potentially get a guarantor to sign for you. Most landlords will accept this. This could be a family member or close friend who does have a good credit history.0
