Statutory sick pay?

I started a thread but seem to have lost it so sorry if this comes up twice!
My partner has been signed off sick today with an injury from lifting at work. He will need an op and cannot work til he has the op and has had recovery time- up to 3months possibly.
He pays into a health scheme at work so hopefully will have the operatation soon.
He pays into a work income protection scheme so all being well he should get a % of his income paid after 30 days sickness.
We also pay a disability/unemployment scheme to cover half the mortgage if off sick for longer than 30 days.
My question is can he also claim stat. sick pay? Is this means tested? Or can anyone get it like child benefit? We have no children and I work full time.
Thanks for your time?
