Statutory sick pay.

Hello all,
i wonder if you can help.
My partner has just been signed off work today as he has an injury from heavy lifting (at work) which means he needs an operation and cannot do his job until he has the operation. Luckily he pays into a work scheme which means hopefully he will have the op privately quite quickly and not have to wait 3 months as we feared.
We have a disability/unemployment insurance we pay into which should kick in after 30 days and pays his half of the mortgage. we only started this insurance in Nov 09.
He works for a private building company and so does not get paid if off sick. he pays into another work scheme which will give him a percentage of his income for a certain amount of time- also kicks in after 30 days if the insurer are happy to pay out.
My question is; can he claim any benefits like stat. sick pay if he is getting mortgage paid through our insurer and some money through the income insurance? Is statutory sick pay means tested or is it like child benefit and pays out to everyone? I work full time and we have no children. We have never claimed any benefits and so are a bit in the dark! Any ideas? Thanks.
