Has anyone dyed faded black clothes black?

I have a couple of black linen shirts and blacke cotton skirts which have faded over time and many washes.
Would it work if I dyed them black? Just wondered if anyone had done this?

I'm too tired to decide if that means you have some kind of scientific knowledge that I don't possess or if it is just too late in the day / early in the morning to see the joke.

It's really impossible to get a good black with home dyes. i have tried in the past but even the dye manufacturers admit - or they used to have this in their leaflets - that you can't get a deep black. the best I've managed was a charcoal grey colour not dissimilar to faded black really, i wouldn't waste cash on it if I were you.

I tried this with black jeans and it was fine as far as the fabric went, but the label on the jeans went black as well. So if I did it again I would take the time to take off the label and put it back on afterwards - worth it for a really well fitting pair of jeans

I used dylon machine dye as well and it worked very well on my black linen trousers. Worth a try! Good luck!

Just to echo catznine, I used the ordinary dye (not machine one) on my black linen trousers and that worked brilliantly!
I was doing it 'cos I'd got loads of little pink spots on them from a brush with some bleach! Covered them completely :D

Ive used dylon machine dye before (the one where you add salt) and it has worked wonders. The colour will fade again, but worth it to get a bit more wear out of some clothes that would otherwise be binned/charity shopped!!!!

I had a pair of light blue jeans which I dyed black with machine dye - I wanted them charcoal and they came out jet black and they won't fade with washing!

A trick of mine if I cant find a top in a colour I want is to buy the white version and dye it to the colour I want. I have also redyed black clothes. I prefer to use the machine dyes as they seem to work better than the other ones. Make sure you run the machine again with nothing in it on a hot wash after you've done it (but it's a good opportunity to put a lot of white vinegar in to give it a good descale) and also the first few times you wash the garment you will have to wash it separately as the colour will run.

At the moment I'm looking for a loose fitting cheesecloth shrug type thing in red but I've only found one in white, so I have a feeling I will be doing some more dying soon.
