How to close Barclays bank account?

I opened up the Barclays account after Martins 100£ tip but had many problems opening the account!!!
Finally the acount did get openned but by that time 28 days period was over, so I was not elligible for the £100 as per the terms n conditions.
So now I am left with a redundant Barclays account which is no good to me.

So I now want to close it, as it would be affecting my credit rating.
Whats the easiest way to do so?
Any phone numbers would be very helpfull.
Many thanks
I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T

You can't close an account over the phone.

If it has a zero balance, then you can return your cheque book and cards (cut up) along with a letter requesting closure to Barclays Bank, Personal Banking, Leicester, LE87 2BB. Or you can take your cards/cheque book to a Barclays branch who can deal with it for you. You should recieve a closing statement about 5 days after the account is closed, so you know it's been done properly.

If there's a balance (or indeed overdrawn balance) on the account, you'll need to either visit a branch to withdraw this, or if you're writing, request a cheque or transfer to another account. Even if you don't think there's a balance, it's worth including disposal instructions in your letter, because Barclays won't close an account with a balance, even if it's just 1p interest that's been accrued and not applied to the account yet.

I used this form from the Barclays site, which is where it looks like AndyR got his information from.

BTW, I'm not sure 'having' a current account, especially one with a zero overdraft, will affect your credit rating at all. Many people, including myself, have several.

Nah, I worked there for five years.

I'd forgotten about the form online....

That explains it then! I did wonder why you were 'word perfect' with the detail yet didn't provide the link to the form.

    You have an excellent memory!
