Get him to ask BT to send him a free homehub (probably have to commit to a contract period to get it), or buy a dg834G, (not the one from comet you linked to, it's no good for adsl).

Does anyone know if Virgin modify the firmware on the WGR614s they send out or is it the original Netgear?

His currently operating with a Speedtouch 510 if thats helps at all? He won't ring his provider cos he's a stroppy teen and that would mean he would have to co -operate and theres no way Mum can do it cos she's almost as cluless as me!

Just another thought, I am currently using the exact same Netgear Modem which I bought from Argos a couple of years back so are they exactly the same or has the freebie virgin one had somehting done to it?

No, the v9 is the latest incarnation of the WGR614 but Netgear release new firmware from time to time (to deal with bugs, introduce new features etc) and this can be downloaded and flashed to the router e.g. latest firmware

I suspect that Virgin may put their own firmware on though which can complicate things.

The new one may have some new features on but if your old one is working I'd be inclined to stick the new one on ebay. You'll probably get £20+ especially if it's still in the cellophane. You could put that towards a new wireless router for your bro but he'd still have to set it up himself:eek:

I've just looked on Ebay and yeah could gte £15 - £20 for a quick sale.

Before I list it on Ebay though do you think it would be worth swapping my two Netgears around and so I would have the new Virgin one which may have be tampered with and could give the one I bought from Argos to my brother? Obviously I wouldn't pass it off as new but it would mean he would get his wireless and a proper pressie!

Failing that could someone please recommend a wireless router which my brother would be able to use on his Bt line with his service provider Pipex?

The one from argos is no use for your brother, it's a cable router, not adsl.

See my previous post for a recommendation, argos isn't the cheapest place if you are going to buy one instead of getting a free one from BT.

No frills ADSL wireless router for your brother -
"The DG834G is the most popular ADSL Wireless Modem Router in the UK!" (so plenty of knowledgeable users out there)

    Available here and elsewhere
