I always considered myself to be a bit of a spendthrift so I was rather worried when I retired, whether or not I'd be able to manage. I've been pleasantly surprised in that I live on my occupational pension and save my state pension (which is now higher than normal, since I deferred it for over two years). And I don't feel that I'm denying myself anything - a nice glass or two of wine with dinner in the evening, a good dress or coat that takes my fancy, my Hermes perfume. Nope, I'm doing OK so far, so good.

We are very fortunate as my husband has a good pension, and he has also done the odd bit of work for his former employer over the last 2 years, so we have been able to save a lot more than previously.

Our mortgage was paid off just over a year ago, so at the moment we have enough left after all the bills are paid to put aside our full ISA allowances and take a few months away in our caravan every year.

However, with the low interest rates now, the return on our savings has plummeted so we may have to reduce our ISA payments next year.
