Never had a credit card!

in Credit cards
I was advised to get a credit card when I went to uni (so I did) but I never used it. A few years later I got a storecard to take advantage of the initial 20% off offer; I paid that off in full but then I never registered that card either.
I've never been in debt (excluding my student loan) and have never really had a need for a credit card - until now.
I'm now in the process of looking for a house. I believe I should be doing something now to improve my credit rating before I get to the stage of getting a mortgage.
Can anyone offer me any advice as to which credit card might be most suitable for me? I've tried doing some research into it but I don't really understand a lot of it
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Why do you want a credit card? What are you going to use it for?0

I'd use it for just general spending - simply because of what people have told me about needing a credit rating to get a mortgage.0

In which case, I would suggest the credit card from the people you bank with. You have a relationship with them at the moment, so it would be arguably easier to gain acceptance. Probably not the best deal on the market (e.g. cashback / 0% deals) however for simply showing you can manage credit, it should do the job.0
