BT not cancelling service when requested

I've been tied to a 12 month anytime service with BT. Got the letter around 3 weeks ago informing me that my 12 months would be renewed at the end of Febuary unless I phoned to cancel it. All well and good. I phoned to cancel the service as I have every intention of jumping to the O2 service.

Checked my online status today and still showing as 12 month contract. This may or may not be correct as technically I'm still within my contact period. Phoned to check only to discover that the first person had done nothing. My contract was still showing as going to be renewed. So I had to go throught the process of having to cancel again. First time I asked just to go onto the anytime monthly, which as I understand it would have been £1 a month more than current payment. This time I was told my only option was the weekend and evening only package as the anytime was no longer available.

So if you think you've cancelled its worth checking they really did it.

I went back online to check and both calling plans were showing as active at the same time. Then have just gone back and can now see a weekend only plan which is a 12 month tiein. what is wrong with these people?

I phoned to be told that the unlimited weekend plan is not a twelve month tie in despite what it says on the webpage

"All you pay is £11.54 a month line rental on a 12 month minimum term. "
