Buying my husband a sat nav for his birthday, but I know absolutely nothing about them. Its not likely to be used abroad at all. Could someone please explain about the downloads I would need to subscribe to. Also It would normally be used in the car but is it possible to get one that includes hgv routes etc. Thanks.

This forum regularly gets "what is the best..." queries and in general there is no easy answer. The feature lists vary a lot by make and model, and it's impossible to cater for personal taste.
Garmin and TomTom are generally accepted to be the leading makes. If you are not familiar with either, it may be a good idea to go (with OH if that suits) to somewhere like Halfords and have a look at several in your price range. If you buy there you will probably pay 10-20% more than you would if you got the best online price, though they do sometimes have good deals.
Software and map update downloads are simple with both, but maps will be costly after the first one (which is usually free). General consensus seems to be not to bother and just get a new unit every few years.
Several manufacturers (including Garmin) sell HGV-specific versions, but they tend to be way outside your budget. As a simpler solution, most makes will accept HGV-related Points Of Interest such as height and width restrictions. You can get more info about that at the pocketgpsworld.com HGV/Motorhome forum section.0
